I love this one, as I love all the likeability laws.
So much of this one has to do with our word choices.
Beyond please and thank you, just small things, like “Would you mind?”
“Do you have a moment?”
“Are you busy – could I have a moment?”
On the phone, I answer by saying, “Hi, this is Jerome.”
Most of the time people hesitate, thinking it’s a recording.
Makes for some fun conversations.
But it lets whoever is calling know that who they’ve reached Jerome — which may or may not be the person they’re calling for.
When I’m calling someone else, always the first words I say are, “Do you have a moment?”
That’s just being polite, because everybody’s so busy.
Some people always say they just barely have a moment, doesn’t matter what time I call them.
Not very likeable of them. So I don’t call them often.

The “propinquity effect”. You are right. I do enjoy saying it. I believe that others enjoy hearing it; even if they’re too prideful to admit that they don’t know what the word means. I have found this law to reign true, even if the outcome is negative. For instance, just Friday I was watching the Oprah Winfrey Show. One of her guests: “The Woman Who Survived” admitted that an ex-boyfriend after he repeatedly beat and verbally abused her was given chance after chance. Why? Simply because he didn’t live far and he “came around” more frequently than not. I will not go into the outcome; it’s much to horrific for such a positive blog as this one. The point is, if Law 9 works for an evil-doer, to what an even greater degree it will work for me. I am already working Law #10.

Excellent, Bob! Back in 2007, I lead an excursion! During the process, I was boldly visiting chambers of seedlings with aroung 100 children we organised a 2 day camp for in Double Harvest, HAITI! And, as I was leaving a chamber with the kids, an agronomist harsly told me that we were not supposed to get into the chambers for health reasons. I agreed and said “Thank You” to inform me. You won’t believe a word I am going to say, Bob! After saying “Thank You”, the man spent half an hour guiding us to wonderful places on the compound we did not intend to visit previously! How great to be polite?! Thank you, Bob!
